If you are a fan of the ocean life Mauritius will be a great island for you! Not only the diving is great, there are also some great snorkeling spots. Find my top 5 below.
- Blue Bay Marine Park
Blue Bay is my number one snorkeling spot in Mauritius! This bay is listed as a Marine Park since 1997 and has beautiful coral reefs and abundant sea life. Getting in from the shore you’ll find angelfish, anemonefish, cornetfish, triggerfish and even more. Try to take a boat so they’ll take you to the best snorkel spots to occasionaly spot a sea turtles as well.
Blue Bay is has a public beach with good parking spots. Try to get in the water at the side of Peninsula Bay to have immediate acces to the corals without having to swim too far. Check out this website for a map of the beach: https://www.snorkeling-report.com/spot/snorkeling-blue-bay-mauritius/
2. Ile Aux Cerfs
Île aux Cerfs is a privately owned island on the east coast of Mauritius. Located at Trou d’Eau Douce in the largest lagoon in Mauritius, the island of Ile aux Cerfs offers 87 hectares of lush vegetation and pristine white sandy beaches.
On this island you’ll find butterflyfishes, boxfishes or even Moorish Idol. There are also triggerfish and white-spotted puffers. However be sure to wear your watershoes because there are quite some sea urchins.
How to get to Ile Aux Cerfs: The island is open to the public from 9am to 6pm. From the village of Trou-d’Eau Douce, a shuttle leaves from the pier at Pointe Maurice every half hour from 9:30 am to the island’s pier.
You can also take a catamaran to the island. There are many companies that offer this boat trip.
3. Trou aux Briches
The shallow waters and beautiful coral reef make this beach great for snorkeling. Trou-aux-Biches lagoon is easy accessible as well. Many tropical fish can be seen on the reef and if you’re lucky you’ll even spot a sea turtle.
4. Pereybere beach
Pereybere beach has two spots for snorkeling. The first spot you’ll find at the right side of the public beach, close to the Pointe d’Azur. This beach can be quite crowded when you visit in the weekends.
The second spot you’ll find at the other side of the Pointe d’Azur at Plage des Blancs, which is a beautiful beach as well!
Here we can snorkel in a lagoon with calm and shallow water (↕1.50-2m). The seabeds are diverse, with some beautiful coral patches, which increase in number as we approach the barrier reef.
There are a lot of different fish species living in these waters, such as triggerfish, damsels, wrasses, and boxfish. There is also a chance of spotting some turtles, which can be frequently observed while snorkeling.
5. Pointe aux Piments
The beach of Pointe aux Piments is located on the northwest side of the Island and has a just-offshore protected coral reef, making it a perfect destination for snorkeling! It’s also a known area to spot sea turtles, so make sure you take an underwater camera with you but keep in mind to not interfere with them in their natural habitat.
